Isn’t Arnaoudov’s tonal world precisely that musical equivalent to Borges’s universe and his library of Babel winding into eternity composed of an indefinite and perhaps infinite number of hexagonal galleries, with vast air shafts between, uncountable volumes in a multitude of languages and versions, and a spiral stairway, sinking abysmally downwards and soaring upwards to remote distances?
Might he not be the librarian and reader in one, and the writer as well, rearranging, rereading, rewriting volume upon volume of stories born by his imagination as a result of encountered texts, images, sounds, places, events or anything else he has experienced up and down the floors of the winding stairway or across the vast shelves of the library of the universe?
In this act of rewriting interpretations further flexed through his personal attitude and individual expression, would a surreal meeting of personalities of different ages not be possible, a homogeneous blend of tonally narrated texts and timbrically depicted images, as well as matching with ultimate precision technological devices from diverse artistic practices into effective artistic mechanisms?
It is perhaps this particular mode of rewriting that allows for bonding phenomena across the abyss of time and infinity of space together, into an immediate adequacy of the here and now – the proximity to our very own cultural environment; phenomena shared as personal contemplation on the meaning of experiencing the reading itself. Arnaoudov’s imaginary and musically imagINative stories are spellbinding with their inimitable peculiarity and the magnetic power of their sonority. Their exquisite narration, assertive expressivity and exuberant figurative language enthral one into their imaginary-phantasmagorical world and make you want to reread them again and again.

Blachernae.

This CD is a presentation of four sound-poems by Gheorghi Arnaoudov written during the years 1991, 1996, and 1998. They are the result of his collaboration with the Bulgarian Choreographer Mila Iskrenova in various dance performances with the Arabesque Dance Company, theatre actors, and students from the New Bulgarian University. This collaborative process creates meaning on multiple levels and captures one of the most cosmopolitan Bulgarian artists, whose works seem to challenge time and space, at the height of his powers. Following the traces of the creation, the composer, in this work, converses with Orpheus, Thomas Aquinas, Wagner, Joyce, and the Miladinovi brothers traversing meridians and examining parallels in order to explore the sounds and thoughts of the modern world. The words of sages and poets inhabit his staves, and his music is always beautiful, pleasing, and prophetic. These four works relate to dance - to the human state that is closest to fl ying, the experience of which every being dreams.
The Way of the Birds I-III (1995-1996) represent three large fragments from Gheorghi Arnaoudov’s cycle of three poems for soprano and various chamber ensembles based on medieval Bulgarian love texts dated from the time of the Bulgarian National Revival - around the 17th and 18th centuries-employed in their authentic form from the Zagreb edition of the Miladinovi brothers’ Bulgarian Folksongs of 1861. The three parts follow the chronological order of the entire cycle. The Way of the Birds I introduces a virtuoso “raga” in the fl ute over the pure cantus fi rmus in the voice, based on a song from the Western Rhodopi region, forming a strange kind of motet. The Way of the Birds II’s sumptuous and colorful development within the instrumental ensemble contrasts with the ascetic vocal melodies, which weave authentic ritual chants and auguries into the amorous texts.
